In 1867, Dr. William Trott, opened a magic show in his Charleston, South Carolina, apothecary shop. Soon after, rain began to fall on the city and continued for days. Frightened residents heard a rumor that Charleston was being punished because Dr. Trott had kidnapped a mermaid he had displayed in his shop. The result? The Mermaid Riot of 1867. The murder of Helen Clevenger is one of Asheville, North Carolina’s most infamous crimes. In July of 1936, the 18 year old college student was murdered in a room at the Battery Park Hotel. A hotel employee was tried, convicted and executed for the murder but his conviction remains highly contested. In fact, some people say his conviction was a case of injustice.

In November 1954, Ann Hodges was resting in her Oak Grove, Alabama home when a meteorite crashed through her roof and hit her. She became the only known human being to survive a meteorite strike. Ann was thrown into a media spotlight she never wanted and learned that fame can cause more damage than a meteorite landing on your hip.

In 1922, Lillian Knox ran one of the largest lumber companies in the state of Texas. She was known for her business savvy, her take charge attitude and her acts of kindness to the timber families who worked hard to make the company a success. The Lady Bountiful loved the attention and praise she received for her generosity. But in 1922, she received attention from investigators who felt her husband’s sudden death, allegedly of suicide, was suspicious. This wouldn't be the only mystery Lillian would be associated with.

Episode 47 Clotilda and Africa Town

The last ship to bring slaves to America arrived in Alabama’s Mobile Bay in 1860, carrying in its hull more than 100 Africans who had been kidnapped from their villages and sold into slavery. The slavers hid the evidence of their illegal operation by burning and sinking the Clotilda in the Mobile River Delta. For over 150 years, the ship was shrouded in mystery, until an Alabama environmentalist and reporter found it in 2018.

In September of 1998, the unidentified body of a 10 year old boy was found under a billboard, near a North Carolina highway. A determined investigator and his team worked  to solve the mystery of the boy’s identity. In 2018, the mystery would be solved thanks to the help of Barbara Rae-Venter who helped solve the Golden State Killer case
